Learning and playing a musical instrument is one thing, having access to one or carrying one around so that you can play it anytime anywhere is another thing, especially when the instrument you learnt is a heavy/bulky one.

Once applications live in the cloud, the key to success will be harnessing network effects so that those applications literally get better the more people use them … Today we see that applications are being driven by sensors, not just by people typing on keyboards. They are becoming platforms for collective action, not just collective intelligence. — extracted from Webcast: Web Squared page

Was scanning an article “Web Squared: Web 2.0 Five Years On” written by Tim O’Reilly and John Battelle for the recent web2.0 summit, and I was attracted by the Smule’s Ocarina application for iPhone. Perhaps I’m losing touch with some of the latest technological advancements without owning the phone myself, but it appears that music players can carry a synthesiser that can emulate their favourite musical instrument while moving. How conveneient (: (of cos here assumed you owned an iPhone). Check out the video below, AND do read O’Reilly and Battelle’s article to get a glimpse of the world we’re advancing into, if we are not already into it (:

Music and Life

Posted by TYH on Friday Jul 17, 2009 Under 06. enTeRTAINmeNT

seen this shared by dear friend tuck soon via fb, watch it first/too? (:

if one appreciates this video, it probably means one is no longer young. if one doesn’t appreciate this video, it means one is either (1) young in terms of biological age (2) not young in terms of biological age and in a state of self-denial. this animation reminds us that life’s not just abt waking up in the morning, go to work, work … work … work …, time’s up leave work go home, sleep, morning go to work again … and the cycle repeats itself and on and on …

if one lives to work, probably you should go back to this story (:

the businessman and fisherman story

Posted by TYH on Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 Under 06. enTeRTAINmeNT

have seen this story some years back but didn’t get a chance to store it away. there are a few variations of this story, a minor tweak here and there but more or less the same. here’s it:

There was once an American businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Mexican village. As he sat, he saw a Mexican fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore and noticed that the fisherman has caught quite a number of big fishes that is known to be a delicacy. The American was really impressed and asked the fisherman, “How long does it take you to catch so many fishes?”

The fisherman replied, “Oh, just a short while.”

“Then why don’t you stay longer at sea and you could catch even more?” The businessman was astonished.

The fisherman simply does not agree. “This is enough to feed my whole family,” he says.

The businessman then asked, “So, what do you do for the rest of the day then?”

The fisherman replied, “Well, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fishes, then I would go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I will take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I will join my buddies in the village for a drink, we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night. My days are ever so complete and carefree.”

The businessman does not agree with his way of life and offered a suggestion to the fisherman.

“I am a PhD holder graduated from Harvard University, specialising in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you have to spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fishes as possible. And when you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fishes. As you go on, you will be able to afford to buy more boats, recruit more fishermen and lead a team of your own. Soon you will be able to set up your own company, your very own production plant for canned food and do direct selling to your distributors. At that time, you will have moved out of this village and to Mexico City, and then expand your operation to LA, and finally to New York City, where you can set up your HQ to manage all your other branches.”

The fisherman asks, “So, how long would that take?”

The businessman reply, “About 15 to 20 years.”

The fisherman continues, “And after that?”

The businessman laughs heartily, “After that, you can live like a king in your own house, and when the time is right, you can go public and float your shares in the Stock Exchange, by then you will be rich, your income will be coming in by the millions!”

The fisherman asks, “And after that?”

The businessman says, “After that, you can finally retire, you can move to a house by the fishing village, wake up early in the morning and catch a few fishes, then return home to play with kids, have a nice afternoon nap with your wife, and when evening comes, you can join your buddies for a drink, play the guitar, sing and dance throughout the night!”

The fisherman was puzzled, “Isn’t that what I am doing now?”

Posted by TYH on Thursday Jan 17, 2008 Under 06. enTeRTAINmeNT

this animation entitled “Tupid’s Story” was put together by my student sihui and her friends imelda, daryl and yingxin for the “Valentine’s day event for MTV” competition.

valentine’s just one month away and this story relates itself to the day :) hope you enjoyed it as much as i do. like what i told sihui, there’s much to be desired towards the ending and a “to be continued …” can be added to the last frames. let’s wait for their next creative creation. enjoy :)

Kiwi – an animation

Posted by TYH on Friday May 4, 2007 Under 06. enTeRTAINmeNT

received this link on the Kiwi animation from jiehao and here’s a description of it extracted from ISFAT:

“Kiwi!” is an animation about a Kiwi – a type of bird that cannot fly, who spends its whole life working towards achieving his dream. The kiwi strived to create the illusion that it was flying over a forest as it soared down through the sky from the top of a cliff. Thus, the kiwi spent what must have been its whole life nailing trees to the side of a cliff. All this, to fulfil its one dream of flying, even though it was technically unable to. There are several powerful messages behind Kiwi, but mainly, it makes you think: no matter how absurd and seemingly out of reach your dreams are, what’s stopping you from achieving them?

read the full interview with the animator Dony Permedi, or visit his home page. the video below is viewed via YouTube. otherwise a QT mov file is available via Dony’s home page.
enjoy :)
