February 2008 Archives
once again it's 震耳欲聋 out there which is better than any Dolby Digital Surround effect. it's the 15th day into the Chinese New Year and you can find a detailed overview of the Lantern Festival here that traced its history back to the Han dynasty.
and here's a photo of yh3 with his ç¯ç¬¼ (supposed to be a "å…”åç¯" but we din managed to get one that's rabbit-shaped).

to mark the end of the cny celebration, here's the one and only cny greeting card that i received via snail-mail this year:

something to cherish dearly :)
today marks the last day of my first semester in fudan and this is my final installment for the series of (feels like never-ending) examinable essays:
Title: 《新加坡华文华语与青年的调查》
(in English): A sociolinguistics study of youths and Chinese language in Singapore
Synopsis:
This paper presents a sociolinguistics study conducted with 56 youths who have studied Chinese Language (CL) during their secondary/junior college days in Singapore and have since left and 'graduated' from the CL classroom. Two primary research questions drove this study:
1. Is there any change in the youths' proficiency level of CL after leaving the CL classroom?
2. How are the youths using CL after graduating from secondary schools/junior colleges?
Three secondary research questions were explored to provide input to the two pri qns.
Data collection was conducted through the administering of an online survey.
Keywords: singapore, chinese language, education, survey, youth, sociolinguistics
Acknowledgement:
A BIG THANK YOU to all my students and friends and students' friends who have contributed by completing the online survey, without which this study would not have been possible. And since it's still 大年十一of the Chinese New Year, may I wish one and all "新年快乐,万事如意!学/事业进步,阖府安泰!"
And here's it, may I present ... (the free Acrobat Reader is needed to view the reports)

过年了!this is the first time i realise how different it is and why the elders said that there is a lack of 过年的气氛 back where we were. look at the movie clipped (it may take a while to stream and load, BIG 20MB Quicktime file) taken just OUTSIDE MY WINDOW at around 0000hr. it's truly 震耳欲聋!
立春does not serve much meaning in the past, but here in shanghai, i have finally found the meaning to this term. could be 心理作用, but the FEEL of today's weather's contrastively good and there's sunshine for most part of the morning and afternoon, and daylight is noticeably longer (just to add to the 心理作用coz i have noticed the daily extension of daylight since the winter solstice冬至)
what's 立春the explanation by our experts from the shanghai meteorological bureau is on the next page ... BUT before that, here's 2 photos to share:

yh3 standing proudly with his first snowman ever!
AND

a view of shanghai outside our window after 5 days of record-breaking snowing.
you can compare it with the 'before' to see the effect :)
chanced upon this "Classroom Action Research" page put up by Madison Metropolitan School District, it presents a good breakdown for easy reading, and you'll be guided through the steps and processes of carrying out an AR. the content headings are as follows:

And here's an AR report entitled "Curriculum Adaptation And Literacy For Non-Auditory Learners" written by Bari Solochek, it's both a very good example and an interesting read as well. it begins with:
For as far back as I can remember, my place has been in a rocking chair. All throughout my elementary and secondary education, if I was studying, I was sitting in the living room in “my†rocking chair with the stereo on. Everyone said that I had terrible study habits. I agreed, but, I did well in school nonetheless. When I went to college, one of the first things that my father told me was that the
house seemed so empty when he walked by the silent rocking chair. Not only did that
empty rocking chair affect my father, but it also affected me ... ...
if you are interested, do read on to find out about how a teacher relates his 'own problem' to the way he carried out his teachings in class.
oh yes, i was looking for references to VAK learners when i found what's above.

some of you experienced problem viewing the stream on-the-fly, so here's the ZIP file containing it (content: 1 html file, 1 px file, 1 plugin-installation exe file, 1 README.txt).
if you are not sure what to do after unzipping the file, check out README.txt

accessing flickr from where i am is near impossible for (un)known reason(s), so it's been eons since i updated yh juniors' photos to the album.
am in the midst of preparing/reading for my last 2 examinable assignments, and hav strayed away from my work (will be surprised myself if i din), and so hav decided to put together this photo stream which is pretty easy to create with proshow.
the photostream object is BIG (18MB) so it'll take quite a long while to load on a 512k broadband connection. it utilises the prodex presenter plugin which will be downloaded automatically (you may have to authorise the installation though)
hope you'll like it when it's finally d/led :)
