saw links to this "Growing Up Online" production by FRONTLINE|PBS looking into the life of our youngsters. have not had the time to go through it myself, but i'm believe the issues and concerns raised in the programme would be common to us all teachers/parents and even growing up youngsters themselves? even as we are watching it we too are growing up online in a way isnt it?

here's a direct link to some of the press responses after the broadcast of the production.

good examples of student(s) blogging?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

saw this in another feed, Will's looking for good examples of student blogs in the classroom, with blogging as defined by "writing that has “Links with analysis and synthesis that articulates a deeper understanding or relationship to the content being linked [to] and written [about] with potential audience response in mind.”

read the post and the many useful feedback which fellow teachers/educators have left under Will's post.

if you happen to have some good examples to share, you can leave your comments with Will's post for all the share too :)

VoiceThread (and Ed.VoiceThread)

chanced upon this tool "Voice Thread" when i saw it mentioned in one of my blogline feeds (which has been neglected for 3 weeks at least), it's a pretty impressive tool which allows a teacher to engage students in self-expression or group conversation on some common topic. the 'topic' can exist in 14 types of media format (wmv, ppt, gif, pps, pdf, jpg, doc, png, opd, bmp, xls, mov, flv, avi) and the conversation can occur in 5 ways (voice, video, phone, type, upload).

more useful features for teachers include comments moderation, which allows teachers to invite parents, communities to view and participate (students can only invite peers within the community to comment on their work); to protect privacy further (or i think it suits students' needs to adopt different personalities at different time), they can create multiple identities/avatars when 'talking'.

would definitely like to experiment with it if i were in the classroom right now, if only ...

you simply have to check out the following official intro to learn more about Voice Thread (not juz in written form here):

  1. What's a VoiceThread anyway?
  2. What's Ed.VoiceThread?

if you are currently in school teaching, you can 'go pro' any apply for a FREE (with some conditions) account and explore it for use with your students! details' here.
am slow in finding out about this platform, but it's never too late :)

how is grammar to be taught with composition writing? is there any relationship between a good piece of writing and it's grammar, aside from the simple phrase 'grammatical error free', which translates into compliance with grammatical rule. what i'm exploring in this essay is beyond the 'compliance' issue, how does renowned writers managed grammar in their writings (knowingly or unknowingly) so that it makes a good piece of literary work? did not manage to come out with much conclusions in this round of exploration coz the issue turned up to be too complex for a simple analysis of two pieces of writing to produce any recommendations.

Lao She 老舍《养花》

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

a Tupid's Story

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

this animation entitled "Tupid's Story" was put together by my student sihui and her friends imelda, daryl and yingxin for the "Valentine's day event for MTV" competition.

valentine's just one month away and this story relates itself to the day :) hope you enjoyed it as much as i do. like what i told sihui, there's much to be desired towards the ending and a "to be continued ..." can be added to the last frames. let's wait for their next creative creation. enjoy :)

Logo - my first programming language

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

in the midst of writing a (next-to-meaningless) term paper and my mind drifted off (not surprising) and the word "Logo" came to mind.

gotten this off wikipedia:

Logo is a computer programming language used for functional programming. It is an easier to read adaptation and dialect of the Lisp language; some have called it "Lisp without the parentheses." It was created for educational use, more so for constructivist teaching, by Daniel G. Bobrow, Wally Feurzeig and Seymour Papert. Today, it is known mainly for its "turtle graphics", but it also has significant facilities for handling lists, files, I/O, and recursion. Logo can be used to teach most computer science concepts, as UC Berkeley Lecturer Brian Harvey does in his "Computer Science Logo Style" trilogy.

here's a sample of logo's code.
to get a copy of the berkeley's logo, visit Brian Harvey's home page or George Mills' MSWLogo page.

if you are hunting for a firewall software and you'll like something that's FREE (and good of coz), get ZoneAlarm Free.

Welcome to the intersection of ZoneAlarm® ingenuity and philosophy. Since day one we have been giving away our award shattering firewall for free. Why we do this is simple - we fundamentally believe everyone has the right to experience the Internet in safety. Please enjoy, with our compliments.

and btw if you are looking for FREE antivirus software (and good one of coz), get AVG Anti-virus Free Edition. i have been using it for 3 years and it has helped me grab many viruses on the run. especially useful when your friends plugged in their usb/thumb/flash drives into your pc/laptop. and the best thing is, AVG uses relatively less system resources compared to some other BIG names which you may be familiar with ;)

keyboard's always the same old keyboard?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

saw this article entitled "The 10 Worst PC Keyboards of All Time" on pcworld off /. did not realise there's so many interesting/confusing keyboards before the first ibm-pc keyboard that i have ever owned.

some of the comments on some of the keyboards:

  • Some of the keys controlled as many as six different functions.
  • had no Backspace key.
  • too many symbols printed on each key.
  • poor key placement ... resulting in users' making repeated accidental hits and sending the cursor back up to the top of the screen.
  • have anyone seen the period key? Oh, it's over there on the numeric keypad.
  • no Left Shift key existed--instead, a Control key sat in its place
  • most frustrating key combinations was Shift-Q, which would quit a program or reset the computer, much to the chagrin of users who lost a day's work while erroneously trying to capitalize the letter Q.

how lucky i am :P

if you have backup your dvd and ended up having two folders audio_ts and video_ts, you can rebuild your dvd with 2 freewares alone. afterdawn.com has this HOWTO guide which can guide you through the steps (including getting the reqd software). quick steps: 1. grab Folder2Iso. 2. use roxio creator, nero burning rom, dvd decrypter or some software that can write the ISO file.

The Interpretation of Dreams; Psych Web

was looking for a reference on Sigmund Freud's (1900) "The Interpretation of Dreams" and came upon a 3rd edition available on the web via Psych Web put up by Dr. Russell A. Dewey (PhD).

Psych Web is an excellent web site on psychology. you can find a complete, 725-pages introductory psychology textbook that's available on the site! you can find many other related resources on the left menu bar and even an apa style reference sheet called the APA Manual Crib Sheet.

explore n enjoy :)

WikiMatrix provides two choices:

1. A direct "Select-and-compare" mode which allows you to choose and compare features of some 99 wiki sites online. The comparison is very comprehensive, which includes General Features, Hosting Features, System Reqiurements, Datastorage, Security/Anti-Spam, Development/Support, Common Features, Special Features, Links, Syntax Features, Usability, Statistics, Output, Media and Files and Syntax Examples.

2. Use the "Wiki Choice Wizard" engine which will ask you a few questions and generate a recommended list of wiki sites for reference. The questions asked what features do you need, which include "History", "What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG)", "Software or hosted?", "Your own Domain?", "Corporate Branding", "Storage System?", "Free and Open Source?", "Programming language?".

a very useful reference to have imho :)

chanced upon Prof Wang, William Shi-Yuan (王士元教授)'s home page in the CUHK server. and in this 1-page long home page, he has shared 38 of his publications in PDF format for download by netizens who are interested in his research work.

if only more researchers/professors are like prof wang, guess the life of students/researchers/teachers/readers would be much easier alike. until the day ... ...
